Report from the Tohoku Area – Living with and in Fear of Radiation in Fukushima – November 2012

By administrator On November 25, 2012 · Add Comment
Mother Nature seems quite angry, and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of those who have suffered enormously from Hurricane Sandy. Sandy reminds us of the destructive powers of nature, and even 20 months after the earthquake and tsunami hit Eastern Japan, lives of many have still yet to return to normal. I [...]

Update from a Visit to Earthquake/Tsunami Ravaged Region in Japan May 31, 2012

By administrator On May 31, 2012 · Add Comment
A colleague and I recently spent a day up in the Tohoku region, visiting Rikuzentakada, Ofunato (Koishihama), and Sendai. In contrast to my previous visit to the same area in February, the weather cooperated, and with no snow impeding our vision like the last time, we were able to see more clearly the progress to [...]

Minami Sanriku Visit on May 15, 2011

By administrator On May 15, 2011 · Add Comment
Today’s (May 15) visit was to Minami Sanriku, including a small fishing village that was basically wiped out by the tsunami. The challenge for this village is figuring out its future in light of its long, secular decline even before the disaster. Many of the villagers are elderly, and there was only one child, who [...]

Even after two months, areas still look war-torn.  What is amazing is that buildings easily withstood the 7.1 magnitude quake but were destroyed by the tsunami.  27,000 people are in shelters in Ishinomaki, which is the highest total of any area hit by the earthquake/tsunami.
